How to Hang a photograph

How to Hang a photograph

We all enjoy having inspiring pictures hanging on the walls of our home. But it doesn't matter how expensive or how inspiring the photo is, if it is not hung correctly it will not look good. Here are the steps to hanging a photo correctly on a wall in your home.

First, find the desired spot on the wall and mark it with a pencil. Pictures should hang at eye level, about 57 inches from the floor. At that height, draw a short horizontal line. Hold the town of your framed photo over that line and make a second line where the top of the frame hits the wall. Flip the photo over. If it has a hook in it, part from the top of the hook to the top of the frame. If it has a wire, pull the wire taut and part from the top of the frame to the peak of the wire. This tells you how many inches down from the top line that you have to put the nail in the wall. Now part from the top-of-frame mark you made to the point where your wire or hook sits. Mark that point with a horizontal line and circle it. That's where the nail will go. Tap the wall on your hanging area. If you hear a dull thud, that means there is a stud beneath the sheetrock. You can tap your nail in at a 45 degree angle. However, if you hear a hollow sound, then you will need to get a picture-hanging hook or a hollow-wall anchor and screw. (If you prefer not to try the tapping method, there are stud finders available at your local hardware store.) Now you can hang your photo on the wall and level it.

· Frames mouldings. Often the frames come in ready cut parts and just need to be joined with glue. These come in wood and metal. These mouldings can be ordered online from the varied designs available. These can be joined together with clampers.

· Mount. Mount is a contrasting coloured board with surrounds the picture. This can be singular or double mount. Mount cutters are used to cut it to cut these mounts made of cardboards or fiber to dimension.

· Mitre joint. The mouldings are joined together at the vertices. This has to be exactly at 45 degrees for an exact snug fit. Else, the framing becomes flawed. V nails are used as joiners mostly.

· Backboard. This is the component that holds the whole structure of the framed picture.

These are the main requirements. Other than this, the tools needed for proper framing are mitre trimmer, joiner, mitre saw, tab gun, glass cutter, ruler/scale and mount cutter.

After the frame has been set up and the photograph has been set into the frame, all that is left to do is mounting it on a wall. This requires nails and hold ups, which can balance the weight of the whole framed structure.

Turn the photograph face down. Mark one third from its top and attach two loops on whether side. This is the point where the hanging loop or ring comes.

To close off, the gap between the backboard and the frame is taped. This helps the structure from collapsing.

That is all Diy photograph framing is all about!
